How to Draw A Cartoon Ocean
Step 1
In this tutorial on how to draw an animated ocean, we’ll draw this ocean scene in a frame.
We will use straight lines for the top to draw this frame, preferably drawn with a ruler. The bottom two corners are rounded to reveal the sand protruding from the frame.
So we end this step by drawing the first marine life. You can draw some corals and anemones before moving on to step 2!
Step 2
Corals are always a stunning and colorful sight under the sea, we will add more of them in this part of your cartoon ocean design.
These are designed with thin, curved shapes to make him wave in the water.
As the reference image shows, several branches extend from the coral, making it look like a small tree. That’s all for now, so we can move on to the next step!
Step 3
We’ll add more coral and other marine life to the seabed as we continue this scene.
The other coral will be very similar to the first tree you drew, surrounded by other shapes representing plants and living things.
We then use a jagged line between these elements to indicate the sand between each object. This also extends to the rounded corners you drew in the first step.
Step 4
In this fourth step of our How to Draw a cartoon ocean guide, you will add smaller creatures and objects to the seabed.
These will be diverse, including seashells, starfish, and smaller shapes.
If you can think of other little details, be sure to add your ideas!
Step 5
We’re keeping this step of your cartoon ocean drawing simple! In this step, we will add some bubbles to the water over the background.
These are drawn as simple circular shapes. The reference images show that they don’t have to be perfect circles. You can even draw more or fewer circles, depending on your preference!
Step 6
Now we will add more amazing creatures to this composition! First, we drew a fun squid drawing on the left.
Next, we added a large swimming fish on the right side of the image.
We will add more creatures and more details in the next step of the guide, but feel free to add more creatures to complete this step!
Step 7
This step of our How to Draw a cartoon sea guide is about finishing with some final touches! Specifically, we will add a few more sea creatures to the mix.
First, we’ll draw a round jellyfish with some nice dots. So we added another fish to the scene.
Once you’ve added these, you can add your own!
There are tons of sea creatures and plants that we don’t use. So if you have favorites, you can add them before proceeding to the last step.
Step 8
It’s time to complete this beautiful picture with some colors! The ocean is filled with amazing colors and textures, so there’s so much you can do to make it amazing.
In our reference image, we have tried to include a wide range of amazingly bright colors that you can use as inspiration for your image.
You can even go for any color you like the most! Now you’re in control and can have fun experimenting with different colors.
You can also have fun with the artistic tools and media you use. We think it would look great with watercolor paint and colored pencils for highlights.
